I just watched the most amazing film, Grey Gardens. It is about mother and daughter Edith and Edie Beale Bouvier. The women were filmed at their Grey Gardens mansion and the whole thing is reality tv at its best. The Ediths live in a mansion that is almost not liveable (examples- holes in the walls made by raccoons living in the house, dozens of cats eating/living/sleeping/peeing everywhere). This scenario is quite unique and its real so that creates a memorable impact to the viewer. The women are even more impressive character wise- Edith is 79, sings all the time, sits on her bed and cooks her food on a side burner on her side table, and is totally depended on her daughter Edie who just can't seem to lead her own life and move on. Edie is phenomenal. She wears sweaters pinned strategically with a broach as skirts and head scarves on an everyday basis, well that is if she is not in a 1950's style bathing suit with fishnets and white dancing shoes. She likes to swim on the beach that happens to be in their backyard (that is if her mother allows her to) and sing and dance/march along tunes that sound like they came staright out of Broadway. They live pretty detached from the rest of the world, including their family and only have contact with a boy named Jerry who is their handy man (that guys is pretty crazy too). OMG I am in love with this film. It's pretty sad though because both women are senile, and you kinda feel sorry for Edie for being stuck in that situation with her mother, but they are such memorable people that you can't stop thinking about them.

Ps- Grey Gardens is also a play on Broadway and even though it is playing in NY right now I have hopes that they will tour around the country and make a stop in SF.

R.I.P. Clifford Geertz. A couple of weeks ago I did a presentation for my Historiography class about the anthropologist Clifford Geertz and just last week my professor told me that he passed away. :( Geertz and his wife traveled to Indonesia and Morocco and studied the culture of those countries. I've read some of his work and I enjoy it a alot because he writes really well, almost story-like. One particular reading was about the Balinese Cockfights and how symbolic they are to the people of Bali. I totally recommend his work to those who are interested in behavioral studies.

I am totally loving the one hour time change. Even though it is only 5pm now it feels like its much later in the day. I totally feel so peaceful here in my dark room watching tv and writing this blog, haha. It's super cool because sometimes I forget and when I think I don't have time to do something I look at the clock and realize it's an hour earlier than expected.

I did something pretty cool today. I put together my schedule for next semeter. This time it is extra special because it will be my final semester and then I get to graduate, yipee!! I am taking five classes and one of them is specially useful because it's for students who want to learn about other career paths in the history field besides teaching. Teaching is my plan, but I want to keep my options open. Damn time is passing by. Before I know it I will have a full time job. Omg that's scary...
